Islinda, a human, unexpectedly saves an injured Fae in the forest, who turns out to be Prince Valerie of the Summer Court, the heir and crown prince of Astaria. Despite the inherent wariness between humans and Fae, and the Fae's view of humans as lesser beings, Islinda and Valerie fall in love. Valerie eventually returns to his kingdom, promising to come back for Islinda.
However, it is not Valerie who returns for her, but his brother, Prince Aldric. Dark, brooding, and ruthless, Aldric is feared by all. Though a fierce warrior and son to the king of Astaria, Aldric is denied his right to the throne and cursed due to his dark heritage. Twisted by his circumstances and starved of affection, Aldric seeks to cause misery. He captures Islinda, the woman who has drawn his brother's attention, stealing her from her home for his cruel purposes. Believing that if he cannot have the throne, he can at least toy with his brother's love interest, he takes her as his new prize.
Islinda despises Aldric, loathing him for destroying her potential future with Prince Valerie. She sees him as a villain, now trapped in the intricate politics of the Astarian court and subjected to Aldric's cold games.
