Bob Johansson, a successful software entrepreneur, anticipates a leisurely retirement filled with books, movies, and travel. However, his plans are abruptly cut short when he is killed in a street accident. A century later, Bob awakens to a grim reality: his preserved body has been deemed property of the state. He discovers he has been uploaded as an artificial intelligence into computer hardware, slated to control an interstellar probe. His mission: to scout for habitable planets, securing first claim for Earth. Refusal means being permanently shut down, while acceptance makes him a prime target, as three other nations are fiercely competing to launch their own probes.
Bob’s initial hope for safety in space is quickly challenged. The universe proves to be a dangerous place, teeming with hostile entities. Forty years into his mission, Bob and his copies have spread throughout space, continuing their search for new worlds. Earth, however, has descended into chaos. A system-wide war has decimated 99.9% of humanity, and nuclear winter threatens the remaining survivors. A radical group seeks to eliminate what little humanity is left. Meanwhile, rival Brazilian probes continue their attempts to destroy Bob and his counterparts. Amidst this turmoil, the Bobs encounter a spacefaring species that views all other life as food.
What Bob envisioned as a life of solitary exploration has become a complex struggle. He finds himself revered as a sky god by a primitive alien species and bears the responsibility of finding a new home for humanity. He may also be the only entity capable of preventing all life in the local sphere from becoming dinner for the predatory aliens.
Despite creating enough colonies to ensure humanity’s survival, Bob and his clones, nearly a century into their existence, continue to face challenges. Political disputes persist, and the Brazilian probes remain a threat. The Bobs have also provoked an older, more powerful species, characterized by a large appetite and short temper. After a significant defeat, the Bobs must prepare for a decisive battle to defend Earth and its colonies. However, the younger generations of Bobs are often preoccupied with local issues, hindering a unified front against their enemies. Unexpectedly, two eighth-generation Bobs discover something in deep space that could be humanity's salvation, if they can deliver it to the Sol system before the Others arrive.
